Mesial Temporal Sclerosis and Epilepsy: A Case Report

Awajimijan Nathaniel Mbaba, Michael Promise Ogolodom, Rufus Abam and Nengi Alazigha

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic conditions in the world and is of a major public health concern. The Medial Temporal Lobe (also known as the Mesial Temporal Lobe) structures are most commonly involved in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) which is the most common form of partial epilepsy. Mesial temporal lobe sclerosis (MTS) is the most common pathology associated with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. Radiological investigations with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of people with epilepsy (PWE), especially temporal lobe epilepsy is pivotal to definitive diagnosis and management. We present the case of an epileptic patient whose brain MRI using conventional protocols revealed MTS. Diligent scrutiny of MR images couple with a good knowledge of the MRI anatomy of the medial temporal lobe by the radiologists are imperative to accurate diagnosis.
